When to go

When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

December to April is the northeast monsoon, which in the Maldives is the dry season: sunny skies, low humidity, flat lagoons and the clearest water of the year. Visibility on the outer reefs commonly runs 25 to 40 metres. January to March is the all-round sweet spot, which is also why it is the busiest and priciest stretch. What is the water like year round?

Warm and remarkably steady, 27 to 30 degrees whatever the month. The seasons in the Maldives are about rainfall, sea state and visibility rather than temperature, so a 3mm suit or even a shorty is enough at any time of year.

Is the wet season worth avoiding?

Not entirely, and this is where most brochures oversimplify. May to November brings more rain, choppier seas and visibility closer to 15 to 25 metres, but the plankton that clouds the water is exactly what draws the giants. Rates are lower and the islands are quieter. It is a different trip, not a worse one.

Marine life and timing

Can I see manta rays in January to April?

Yes, but you should understand the trade-off before you book. Manta rays are present at cleaning stations in the central and northern atolls through the dry season, generally on the western side of the atolls where the northeast monsoon pushes the plankton. What you will not get in this window is the mass aggregation at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll, which is a southwest monsoon event peaking roughly July to October. If seeing dozens of mantas feeding together is the point of your trip, you want the wet season, and we will tell you so rather than sell you the wrong dates.

When can I see whale sharks?

Whale sharks are resident year round in South Ari Atoll, which makes them one of the few Maldives highlights that does not depend on the monsoon. Elsewhere, sightings concentrate in the southwest monsoon alongside the mantas. If whale sharks matter to you, South Ari should shape which atoll we book.

So which window should I choose?

Come January to April for the clearest water, calmest seas and the best conditions for photography, for newer divers, and for liveaboard itineraries. Come July to October if the manta and whale shark aggregations are the reason you are going. Both are good trips. They are simply not the same trip, and the single most common mistake is booking the dry season and expecting Hanifaru.

Liveaboard or resort

Should I do a liveaboard or stay at a resort?

A liveaboard covers far more of the atolls and is the stronger choice for a diving-led trip, and the dry season is when the crossings are most comfortable. An eco-resort stay suits couples, honeymooners and mixed groups where not everyone dives, and it is what our current four day package is built around. What does a Maldives trip cost?

Packages start from around USD 1,450 per person for a four day, three night resort stay, and from around USD 2,000 for a liveaboard, both excluding international flights. This is the premium slot in our 2027 calendar. Seven nights suits a liveaboard; five days and four nights works for a resort base. Peak dates, room category and how far ahead you book all move the figure, so ask us for a firm quote on your dates.

Planning from Kuala Lumpur

How do I get to the Maldives from Kuala Lumpur?

You fly to Malé, then transfer onward by seaplane or speedboat depending on which atoll you are staying in. Seaplanes operate in daylight only, which affects how your international flight times need to line up, and it is the detail most independently booked trips get wrong. Sekawan arranges the flights, the transfer window and the resort or boat as one booking.

When should I book, and which 2027 dates work?

Four to six months ahead for the dry season, and earlier for liveaboard berths. On the 2027 Malaysian calendar, Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 6 February with a replacement holiday on Monday 8 February, so four days of leave gives nine days off. Note that the weeks either side of Chinese New Year carry the steepest flight surcharges of the year, and prices ease from around the middle of February.
