When Malaysia’s East Coast Islands Open and Close

Malaysia’s east coast dive islands operate roughly from March to October. Tioman, Redang, Perhentian and Tenggol suspend most resort and dive operations during the northeast monsoon, generally from November until late February. June to August is the most settled window. These are commercial decisions made by individual resorts rather than government closures, so exact dates vary by island, by resort and by year.

April to September is the dependable core of the season. March and October are shoulder months when sea conditions are improving or deteriorating and cancellations are more likely. November to February is not recommended for diving on the east coast.

No. There is no government directive closing the east coast islands. Terengganu’s state tourism authorities have confirmed the state has never prohibited or ordered resorts to close during the monsoon. What happens is that individual resorts and dive centres suspend operations because rough seas make boat transfers unsafe and unprofitable. That is why you will find different dates from different operators: each one decides for itself.

Because different sources are describing different things and presenting them as one fact. Some quote the meteorological monsoon period, some quote when ferries stop running, some quote when a particular resort closes, and some quote when the last resort reopens. Published closure dates for Tioman alone range from December to February at one end to November to early March at the other. All of them are describing something real. None of them applies to every resort.

Tioman generally operates from March to late November, with most resorts and dive centres suspending operations for the monsoon from around December to February. Tioman is the exception to the idea that the islands shut entirely: around 5,000 people live there year-round, so ferries continue running for residents and some hotels and restaurants stay open. Late January is when the island hosts its annual surf festival at Juara, since the monsoon swell that stops diving is what creates the surf.

Redang typically operates from March to October. Resorts close from November until the end of February, and scheduled boat transport stops with them. A few resorts reopen towards the end of February, with most opening in March. Best conditions are June to August.

The Perhentians run from March to October, with the vast majority of resorts closed from November to February for the monsoon and seasonal maintenance. Boat services are largely suspended in that window. March to May offers excellent conditions with fewer people than the June to August school holiday peak.

Tenggol operates from March to October and closes November to February. Visibility is at its best from June to August, typically 15 to 20 metres, with water temperatures of 27 to 29 degrees. Tenggol is the quietest of the four and has the smallest capacity, so dates fill early.

June to August generally gives the clearest water across all four islands. March to May and September to October are the shoulder windows, often with good visibility and noticeably fewer divers. Water temperature stays between roughly 27 and 30 degrees throughout the season, so a 3mm wetsuit is enough for most divers.

You can travel to Tioman, but you should not plan to dive. Ferry services run reduced, weather dependent schedules and cancellations of several consecutive days are common. Redang and the Perhentians are effectively inaccessible, as resorts and scheduled boats both stop. If you do travel in this window, build spare days into your return journey.

Sabah. The east coast of Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah sit on opposite monsoon cycles, so while Tioman and Redang are closed, Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai and Lankayan are diving normally. Cancellation terms depend on the resort and the package.
