Diving Malapascua and Thresher Sharks from Kuala Lumpur

Thresher sharks. Malapascua is the only place in the world with daily thresher shark dives, at a cleaning station on Kimud Shoal, and operators report sighting rates close to 99 percent in every month of the year. That year-round reliability is unusual for any large pelagic species and it is the reason the island exists as a dive destination at all.

An early one. Boats leave in the dark to be at Kimud Shoal at first light, when the threshers come up to be cleaned. It is a deeper dive on a shoal with limited bottom time, and you hold position and wait rather than swim about. Cold, early, and worth it.

More than most people expect. Gato Island has whitetip reef sharks, sea snakes and a swim-through tunnel. Monad Shoal occasionally produces hammerheads and devil rays. Malapascua is also a serious macro and muck diving destination, and there are wartime wrecks and a mandarinfish dive at dusk. A week here does not repeat itself.

December to May is the settled season, with January to April generally considered the best combination of visibility and calm seas. February through Easter is the most reliable stretch of all. Water runs 26 to 29 degrees for most of the year, dropping to about 24 to 26 in January and February, so bring a 3mm suit and consider 5mm if you feel the cold.

It needs care rather than avoidance, and you should know the risk before booking. Late October into December is the highest-risk period of the year for tropical cyclones in the Central Visayas. A storm does not need to hit the island to affect you: it can disrupt ferries, road transfers and island access for several days. The northeast monsoon, the amihan, also runs from November and brings choppier seas and visibility nearer 10 to 15 metres on some days. The threshers do not care about visibility and are still there. Your travel days are the exposed part, not the diving. If you book this window, take flexible flights and build spare days into the return leg. December and January are the calmer half and we would steer you there first.

July to October is low season, with the lowest prices of the year and very few divers, at the cost of more rain and more variable seas. Rain in Cebu tends to arrive in afternoon bursts rather than all day, so morning thresher dives usually still run. If budget matters more than certainty, this is good value.

Fly to Cebu, which has direct service from Kuala Lumpur, then travel overland to the northern tip of the island and cross by boat. The road transfer from Cebu City to the port at Maya takes roughly four hours, and the banca crossing to Malapascua about thirty to forty minutes. Sekawan arranges the flight, a private van rather than a public bus, the crossing and the resort as one booking, which matters on a route with three separate legs.

Five days and four nights is the workable minimum from Kuala Lumpur and gives you three diving days including two thresher mornings. Seven nights is better if you want Gato Island, the macro sites and the mandarinfish dive without rushing. Remember the last boat crossing of the day is in daylight, so your return flight timing needs to allow for it.

Roughly USD 700 to 1,200 per person for five days and four nights, which makes it the most affordable destination in our 2027 calendar and about half the cost of a Maldives trip in the same months. Resorts on Bounty Beach such as Ocean Vida and Evolution offer group deals where the eighth or tenth place travels free, which is where a dive club booking pays off.

Yes, with one caveat. Malapascua has plenty of gentle reef and macro diving that suits new divers, and it is a reasonable place to train. The thresher dive at Kimud Shoal is deeper and requires you to be comfortable at depth in the dark early morning, so it suits Advanced Open Water or above. Two places. It is our October to January slot, and it doubles as the budget alternative to the Maldives in the January to April window, peaking in the same months at roughly half the price. If your dates are fixed by Chinese New Year, which falls on Saturday 6 February 2027 with a replacement holiday on Monday 8 February, this is the trip that fits most budgets.
