Planning a Komodo dive trip

When to go

When is the best time to dive Komodo?

July to October is Komodo’s dry season and the window we build trips around. Cooler, nutrient-rich water moves through the park and brings the marine action with it, particularly manta rays at the cleaning stations. Seas are settled and visibility is good. The wider dry season runs roughly April to November, so shoulder months work too, but July to October is when the diving is at its most reliable.

When can I see manta rays?

Manta rays are the signature of the July to October window. The cooler upwelling that defines Komodo’s dry season carries the plankton they feed on, and they gather at the park’s cleaning stations. Sightings are never guaranteed with wild animals, but this is the period when the odds are at their best.

Is Komodo good for non-divers?

Yes, more so than most dive destinations. Komodo dragons, the Padar Island viewpoint and Pink Beach are land and snorkel activities, so a non-diving partner has a real trip rather than a wait. That is one reason we favour land-based stays for mixed groups.

Diving conditions

Is Komodo suitable for beginners?

Partly, and this is worth being straight about. Komodo has gentle sites that suit newer divers, but the currents that make the park famous also make several of its best sites demanding. Our July to October trips are pitched at intermediate to advanced divers. If you are newly certified, tell us and we will plan the site rotation around your experience rather than putting you somewhere uncomfortable.

How cold is the water?

Cooler than most of Southeast Asia, which surprises people. The upwelling that brings the mantas also drops the temperature, and southern sites in the park run noticeably cooler than the north. A 3mm suit is the minimum and many divers prefer 5mm in the dry season. We will tell you what to pack once your dates are set.

Liveaboard or land-based

Should I choose a liveaboard or a resort?

Both work and they suit different people. A liveaboard reaches the further sites and dives more of the park, so it is the stronger choice for serious divers, and mid-range Komodo liveaboards start from around USD 2,300 per person for a longer itinerary. A land-based resort near Labuan Bajo runs daily boats into the park with lunch aboard, starts from around USD 850 for four days and three nights, is easier to book at short notice, and works far better for anyone prone to seasickness or travelling with non-divers. Komodo National Park fees are charged separately in both cases. For mixed groups we usually recommend land-based.

Getting there from Kuala Lumpur

How do I get to Komodo from Kuala Lumpur?

You fly to Labuan Bajo on Flores, which is the gateway to Komodo National Park. There is no direct service from Kuala Lumpur, so the routing goes through a hub such as Jakarta, Bali or Surabaya. Sekawan arranges the flights, the connection and the park itinerary as one booking so you are not managing separate tickets and a missed connection.

How long should a Komodo trip be?

Our core package is four days and three nights, which covers the dragons, Padar, Pink Beach and Manta Point. For a diving-led trip we would extend that, because the flying time from Kuala Lumpur is better repaid over five to seven days. The 31 August and 16 September 2027 public holidays both make workable short-trip anchors.

Planning

When should I book?

Four to six months ahead for the July to October window, and earlier if you want a liveaboard berth or a group block. Park fees, ranger fees and boat charters are all capacity-limited in the dry season.

Where does Komodo sit in your 2027 calendar?

Komodo is our July to October slot. The rotation runs Maldives from January to April, Sipadan from April to July, Komodo from July to October and Malapascua from October to January, so there is always somewhere in season. See the full 2027 dive calendar for the Malaysian long weekends that line up with each window.
